A few general Mac notes:
- USB 3.0 add-in cards for older Mac Pros (most common one is from a company called Caldigit, another is the Sonnet Allegro) use a very limited, non-Apple USB 3.0 stack that simply won’t work with most USB 3.0 devices on the market today. The add-in card can delivery only very limited USB 3.0 compatibility (because its 3rd party USB 3.0 software stack predates Apple’s own stack). Unless a USB 3.0 device is explicitly listed by the card as being compatible, please assume the device will not work.
- New Mac OS X point releases have a history of requiring updates in individual drivers for various USB devices. Be cautious about upgrading your Mac OS X version, particularly for complex devices like USB graphics and docking. If you’re not the adventurous sort, we recommend searching or checking at Plugable for any issues and waiting until there’s evidence from others that the upgrade will be smooth, before installing the upgrade yourself.
